In 1972, the Van Halen brothers formed their three-piece band. They were initially known as Mammoth, with Eddie Van Halen as lead vocalist and guitarist. Michael Anthony was the third addition to the group (previously a member of "Snake"). After discovering the name "Mammoth" was already being used, they became "Genesis", and soon realized that it was also taken by a band in England, thus reverting back to "Van Halen". Roth said the name was based on the timeless quality of the brothers last name. A quick following for the band was formed in the California area of Pasadena and Hollywood. Gene Simmons of Kiss financed the band's first demo after seeing one of their performances and recorded "House of Pain" and "Runnin' With the Devil". After forgoing any further involvement with the band, Simmons returned to Kiss.

Van Halen debuted to immediate commercial success on the charts and with fans and they exploded into enormous popularity. By 1980, Van Halen was perhaps one of the world's most successful and influentian hard rock bands. In the mid 80s, tensions began building up in the band as talks of replacements came to surface. Following the album 1984, the original line-up was broken when Roth exited the band on April 1, 1985 and was replaced by Sammy Hagar, who would be with the band until 1996 (also known as the Hagar Era). In this time, Van Halen adapted their sounds to the changing musical styles of the industry, and the mix of pop and hard rock styles created a new sound with songs that were longer than their previous recordings.

Hagar departed the group on Father's Day, 1996 after escalating tension with the Van Halen brothers. Mitch Malloy was quickly recruited as Hagar's replacement, only to leave the band and pave the way for Gary Cherone to be recruited. His tenure lasted until 1999, and with his departure brought several years of silence until 2004 when the band went back and forth with replacements for the next couple of years. On July 2, 2007, it was reported that David Lee Roth would tour with the band beginning in late September.
