Tool is a heavy metal American rock band that was formed in 1990 in Los Angeles, California, consisting of drummer Danny Carey, bassist Justin Chancellor, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. The band is widely known for their "exceptionally long or complex releases", controversial and abstract lyrics, unorthodox music videos and censorship. They group has had a lasting effect on newer bands in the nu metal genre, with Keenan's unique singing style influencing artists such as Pete Leoffler of Chevelle. When Keenan was asked about the bands who listed Tool as an influence, he replied: "I don't really see the connection. Because there is some intensity in some of our songs, I think these bands pick up the surface noise, and that's their influence…There's nothing to the music that moves me, or compels me to want to sit down and listen to it, which is unfortunate".
