Toni Braxton Artist Information
Toni Michelle Braxton was born on October 7, 1967 in Severn, Maryland, made famous for her unique husky alto vocal timbre. Her first singing experiences were in her church choir growing up as her father was a clergyman who had strict religious convictions. In the late 1980’s, Braxton and her four sisters Traci, Trina, Towanda and Tamar performed together as The Braxtons and even signed on to Arista Records in 1989. They released their first single, “The Good Life” in 1990, which was not very successful but did draw attention to the group.
Toni Braxton was recruited by “L.A.” Reid and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and she recorded a demo of “Love Shoulda Brought You Home”, which was initially intended for Anita Baker (who was pregnant at the time and couldn’t record). Braxton signed to Reid and Edmond’s LaFace Records to begin working on her solo debut album. Self-titled Toni Braxton reached number one on the US Billboard 200 albums chart, which features hits like “Another Sad Love Song”, “You Mean The World To Me”, “Seven Whole Days” and “How Many Ways”. This album won her three Grammys, two American Music Awards and was certified 8x Platinum with over 10 million worldwide sales.
Her second album was her most successful venture which featured the talents of R. Kelly, Tony Rich and David Foster. The album’s second single, “Un-Break My Heart”, written by famous songwriter Diane Warren, later became Braxton’s signature song and biggest hit. Her next few albums continued to score chart-toppers over the next several years and eventually began to see a decline in song popularity and album sales. In April 2003, she left Arista Records to sign with Blackground Records which had its slow beginnings and a new cache of headaches.
Toni Braxton can be found at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, replacing Wayne Newton as the casino’s headlining act, which began in August 2006 and was extended through August 2007. She has two children with Keri Lewis, a son named Denim Cole Braxton-Lewis and another son named Diezel Ky Braxton-Lewis (recently diagnosed with autism). They currently live in the Southern Highlands Golf Club.
