Tom Petty Artist Information

Thomas Earl "Tom" Petty was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida, and his interest in rock and roll music began at the age of ten when he met Elvis Presley at the set of Presley's film Follow That Dream in 1961. He traded his Wham-O slingshot for a box of Elvis 45s which he would play over and over. When the Beatles broke into the US, he was again greatly inspired towards music. His recording career kicked off professionally when he formed Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. They released their debut album in 1967, and though it didn't do very well in the beginning, it did feature the hit single "Breakdown", one of many staple songs for Petty.

It would be the band's second album, You're Gonna Get It!, which would be their first gold album. It featured the singles "I Need To Know", and "Listen To Her Heart". Their third album, Damn The Torpedoes, went platinum, and it included the hit singles "Don't Do Me Like That", and "Refugee". Their following album also went platinum as the band couldn't seem to do wrong. In the early 80s, bassist Ron Blair would quit the group to be replaced by Howie Epstein. This band lineup would last until 1994. In 1988, Petty became one of the founding members of the Traveling Wilburys (which also included Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne). They released two full albums to critical acclaim before Petty returned to work with his band once more.

Petty released Full Moon fever in 1989, with hits such as "I Won't Back Down", "Free Fallin" and "Runnin' Down a Dream". This was his first real work as a solo artist (though several Heartbreakers were involved). He rejoined his band fully and released Into the Great Wide Open in 1991, spawning several more number one hits. In 1989, though under contract with MCA, Petty signed a secret deal with Warner Bros. Records, a deal that led to an album named Wildflowers in 1994 which sold over three million copies in the US. He returned in 1996 again to work with the Heartbreakers.

It was announced that the band would be starting a North American Tour, beginning May 39, 2008, which follows an appearance by the band at Super Bowl XLII. At that halftime show, they performed "American Girl", "I Won't Back Down", "Free Fallin'", and "Runnin' Down a Dream".
