The Police Band Information
The Police were formed by Stewart Copeland in 1977 after his former group Curved Air disbanded. He was interested in a three-piece group and soon recruited Sting and Henry Padovani to play and they recorded their first single, "Fall Out"/"Nothing Achieving" soon after. Later that year, Mike Howlett invited Sting, Andy Summers and eventually Stewart Copeland and Padovani to play in a project band for a Gong reunion which ultimately led to the foursome playing together as The Police for the first time later that summer. Padovani did continue with the group much longer and the remainder of the group's career held firm with Sting, Copeland and Summers.
The band's first album, Outlandos d'Amour was recorded with a limited budget and no record deal, but when Copeland's older brother Miles Copeland III heard "Roxanne", he landed the group a record deal with A&M Records in 1978. This hit gained the group huge recognition throughout the UK and other countries including Australia. The song, "Message In A Bottle" was their first #1, along with "Walking On The Moon" following closely behind. It wasn't long into the band's career that Sting began gaining wide amounts of popularity and fame and even established an acting career. His rise in fame didn't help his relationship with Stewart Copeland and the relationship became strained.
The band pushed through the pressures of fame and ego and released their fourth album, Ghost in the Machine, which is hugely known for the hit singles, "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "Invisible Sun" and "Spirits in the Material World". Their last group album would be Synchronicity in 1983 which hit #1 in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom. With the ending of the Synchronicity tour in 1984, the members began pursuing their own solo careers and the band was unofficially split. Sting released a highly successful solo debut album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles in 1985.
Rumors began to surface in early 2007 of a band reunion tour that would mark their 30th anniversary. After much deliberation on the final actual involvement of the band members, the story broke on January 22nd that they would indeed reunite for the Grammys with a performance of "Roxanne". When the 49th Annual Grammys came with an opening by the group, they announced, "We are The Police and we're back!" A&M records is promoting their 2007-2008 reunion tour which was kicked of in Vancouver on May 28.
