Born Calvin Broadus, Jr. in Long Beach, California, his name Snoop Dogg originated as the nickname "Snoopy" by his mother for his love of the classic dog in Peanuts. He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School and began his youth in legal trouble. His conviction for cocaine trafficking and membership in the Crips gang seemed to ensure a disastrous result, however, his peers recognized his above average musical abilities and pushed him to pursue a career in music. Dogg's debut album Doggystyle was the result of collaberation with Dr. Dre on his debut album The Chronic in which the two contributed popular raps. Doggystyle became the first debut album to ever enter the charts at #1 with songs like "Who Am I (What's My Name)?" and "Gin and Juice" which reached top ten most-played lists across the country. His involvement with gang-ties led to his arrest in the death of a former rival gang member and was eventually acquitted. He released The Doggfather in 1996 which was less successful than his debut album, because fans felt Dogg's involvement with the album was lacking.

Since then, Snoop Dogg has put some distance between himself and the gangsta rap genre and worked on more alternative sounds and even made several film appearances. As part of the result of his leaving Death Row Records, he shortened his name from Snoop Doggy Dogg to Snoop Dogg and signed with No Limit at the criticism of fans. His next albums Da Game Is Not To Be Sold, Not To Be Told and No Limit Top Dogg did well as he returned to his G-funk style roots. Later, in 2005, Dogg founded his own production company, Snoopadelic Films.

Dogg is currently working with producer JT the Bigga Figga on a documentary entitled Mandatory Business which will showcase Russell Simmons, Spike Lee, Xzibit, Young Buck and 50 Cent. Some of his latest music can be found on West Coast rap albums like Laugh Now, Cry Later by Ice Cube and Cali Iz Active by Tha Dogg Pound and he is also recorded on Cube's album single "Go to Church". Dogg's numerous legal problems from being sued to being arrested multiple times in recent days has kept him in the mainstream buzz often.
