Rush Band Information

Featuring members Geddy Lee (vocals), Alex Lifeson (guitar) and Neil Peart (drums), Rush is a Canadian rock band that was formed in the summer of 1968 in Toronto. John Rutsey was an original member who played with the band from '68-'74 and was replaced by Peart only two weeks before the band began its first U.S. tour. Their first album, released in 1974 which was self-titled, paved the future for the band as they became known for their unique style which included libertarian philosophy, humanitarianism, science fiction and fantasy mixed with the members own instrumental originality.

Notable albums in their early days include their initial self-titled album Rush, a product of their formation of the record label Moon Records in 1974. The album was said to be highly influenced by Led Zeppelin. With the popularity of the blue collar song "Working Man" led to a signing with Mercury Records, launching the band's name into the mainstream. The album 2112 was their first huge commercial success, going platinum in Canada. Others include A Farewell To Kings, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire and a gold-selling best hits album in 1990, Chronicles.

As the general music world's taste changed, so did the band as they fought to adapt to fans climate. Their synthesized sounds shifted to more guitar-oriented with a mix of funk and hip hop in the 1990's with songs like "Roll the Bones" and "Where's My Thing?". Tragedy struck the band in August 1997 when Peart's daughter was killed in a car accident and his wife's death from cancer soon after in 1998. The band took a much needed hiatus, returning to the music world in 2001.

Rush's style has shown dramatic fluctuations over the years, beginning in heavy metal sounds to moving on to hard rock, progressive rock, synthesized sound and modern rock. With several Juno Award wins and the induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994, Rush has earned the respect of their musical peers. Statistics place Rush fifth behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, KISS and Aerosmith for their many consecutive gold and platinum albums. Their most current work is focused on the album Snakes & Arrows and the band began an intercontinental tour in June 2007.
