Rod Stewart Artist Information

Roderick "Rod" David Stewart was born on January 10, 1945 in Archway, North London, the youngest of five children to parents Robert and Elsie Stewart. Early on, Rod collected Al Jolson records and was generally inspired by his music and performing style. He took up guitar at the age of eleven and even joined a skiffle group with friends called the Kool Kats. After trying several career paths, he began his musical career by joining folk singer Wizz Jones and traveling around Europe. He helped found the Ray Davies Quartet (later known as The Kinks), but that didn't prove successful and he left the group. Rod became a part of Steampacket, which recorded several songs, but never made it onto the charts. He then left the group in 1966 and joined Shotgun Express as lead vocalist with Beryl Marsden (only releasing one single). A change in popularity occurred when he joined the Jeff Beck Group and they released their first album Truth in 1968, which became a hit.

Stewart and Ronnie Wood decided to join The Faces, and they released First Step in 1970 that rivaled the sound of The Rolling Stones. The band earned a following with that album and Stewart's name began popping up in the critics' circles. In 1971, he decided to release a solo album, which became a hit and made him a household name with songs like "Reason to Believe" and "Maggie May". He continued on with The Faces and they released Long Player in 1971, which resulted in greater chart success than its successor. He would continue to work with the group and on his solo career meticulously through that time, and his solo popularity began to gain more success than the band's. The Faces final album, Ooh La La was released in 1973 with great popularity, but the band still broke up in 1975, sending Stewart on his permanent solo path.

Rod Stewart moved to the U.S. that same year and released albums that were slow to gain popularity, but in the long run provided stepping stones to his greater successes. 1979s Blondes Have More Fun…or do they? was a great success with 4 million album sales, but it was going to be his last number one album for 25 years. Some critics say he never gained the popularity he had in his early career back, and others say he only got better with time. The facts reflect that Rod Stewart only had three top ten singles between 1982 and 1988 and focused a lot of energy on concert touring. He had a number one hit with "All For Love", part of The Three Musketeers movie soundtrack in 1993 with Sting and Bryan Adams. In recent years, Stewart has concentrated on singing 1930s and 40s style songs from the "Great American Songbook" with great popular success. The 2000s have proven a successful time for Stewart's album releases and he continues to tour often throughout the world.
