Nickelback was formed in Hanna, Alberta by Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger, Ryan Peake and Brandon Kroeger. Brandon has since been replaced by Daniel Adair. Hanna is a small town east of Calgary. The name originates from a job that Mike had at Starbucks. He would frequently say, "Here's your nickel back."

Nickelback officially took shape in 1996. Chad borrowed money from his stepfather and relocated to Vancouver to create his first batch of original material. Nickelback's first release was in 1996 and it was a seven-track EP called Hesher. They also recorded their first full-length album the same year called Curb. The band mates were managing themselves by 1998. They also recorded the album The State in 1998 and signed a record deal with EMI and Roadrunner Records.

They started touring in 2000 to promote The State and were logging approximately 200 shows to try to gain popularity. In 2001, Nickelback released the album Silver Side Up, which jump-started their career to the success it is today. The single "How You Remind Me" peaked at #1 on the Mainstream and Modern rock charts, as well as the pop charts. It became the Billboard Hot 100 #1 single in 2002. In 2003, they release the album The Long Road that gave them another chart topping single "Someday." This album sold over 5 million copies worldwide.

In 2005, Nickelback went back to their studio in Vancouver to begin work on another album. All the Right Reasons featured guests, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and Pantera's Dimebay Darrell. This album was the most popular to date. It sold over 7 million copies in the United States alone and remained in the Billboard Top 30 for over two years. In 2008, they released their sixth studio album entitled Dark Horse.
