Neil Young Artist Information
Following the divorce of his parents at the age of 12, Neil Young moved with his mother back to their family home of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and begin pursuing his music career. At his junior high school, he met Ken Koblun and formed his first band, the Jades. In his later school years, his first stable band was called the Squires, even landing a local hit with a song called "The Sultan". Young dropped out of high school and made music his full-time career. He toured Canada as a solo artist in 1965 and worked with various musicians, including his bass player Bruce Palmer, who formed Buffalo Springfield with other members Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, and Dewey Martin. Their first record, Buffalo Springfield (1967) did well commercially with the hit song "For What It's Worth". The band broke up in May 1968 after releasing their final album, Last Time Around.
Following the end of their band, Young signed a solo deal with Reprise Records and released Neil Young in 1968 soonafter. The next year, he reunited with Stephen Stills by joining Crosby, Stills & Nash, to make the group Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, which debuted in Chicago in 1969. Young released many popular albums and hit songs, venturing off into solo work, including the album Harvest, which was a massive hit that featured the songs "Heart of Gold" and "The Needle and the Damage Done". Part of the album was inspired by the death of band member Danny Whitten by heroin overdose. Young and his band released albums with rising popularity and even ventured into the 80's trying experimental styles which were often not accepted by the recording company. He signed with Warner Brothers in 1988 and released This Note's For You with a new band, The Bluenotes.
Although constantly trying new styles and sounds, Young often returned to his country music roots. He released Harvest Moon in 1992 which was a long awaited sequel to Harvest. Later notable albums include Looking Forward, Silver & Gold, Are You Passionate?, and politically based themed albums such as Living With War. His latest album, Chrome Dreams II, is scheduled for release October 16, 2007, and followed by a 7 week tour starting October 13. Neil Young currently lives on a 1500-acre ranch in Woodside, California, called Broken Arrow.
