Kid Rock, born Robert James Ritchie on January 17, 1971 in Romeo, Michigan, is a highly successful American musician and actor, selling over 22 million albums in his career. His journey into the industry began at the age of 11, when he was a member of the b-boy group 'The Furious Funkers'. After fans at a show commented about watching "that white kid rock", Bo Wisdom of Groove Time Productions dubbed him with the name Kid Rock. Rock then moved into rapping and hip hope styles of music and making acquaintances with producers in the industry.

Kid Rock signed his first deal at the age of seventeen and released his debut album Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast with Jive Records in 1990. Though the album did well, it sparked a lot of controversy and in the end, Jive dropped Rock from the label, causing an independent label, Continuum Records, to pick him up at that point. He released his second album under that name, The Polyfuze Method, in 1993. Continuum went bankrupt in 1994, however, leaving Kid again without a label. This led him to start his own label, Top Dog, in order to have more control over his career. He would work at a recording studio as a janitor in order to gain recording privileges and release his independent work.

His big break came when Jason Flom (then president of Atlanta Records), signed him to a $100,000 record deal after hearing only a couple of new demos. Devil Without a Cause was released in 1998, and though it gained slow success, his live performances eventually ushered in album sales as his popularity began to grow. In the summer of 2000, Kid toured with Metallica, Korn, Powerman 5000, and System of a Down. He would go on to release some of his previously recorded music and also tap into the country rock genre (releasing the popular duet with Sheryl Crow, Picture).

Rock released his first live album in 2006, Live Trucker, and rock N Roll Jesus in 2007. The latter became his first number one album of his career, selling 172,000 copies its first week. On December 17, 2007, he joined Robin Williams, Lance Armstrong, Lewis Black and Miss USA Rachel Smith for a Christmas USO Tour in Iraq. He has stated recently that he'll be returning to his hip hop roots following his latest album.
