Kanye Omari West was born on June 8, 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia. He lived with both of his parents until the age of three when they divorced and Kanye and his mother moved to Chicago. His father, Ray West, was a former Black Panther and one of the first black photojournalists at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (now a Christian counselor). His mother, the late Dr. Donda West worked as a Professor of English at Clark Atlanta University, then at Chicago State University. She eventually retired to serve as her son's manager. Kanye enrolled at Chicago State University, but due to poor grades dropped out to pursue his music career. While working on his career, West worked producing singles for major hip-hop/R&B artists such as Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Cam'ron, Paul Wall, Jermaine Dupri, Alicia Keys and several others.

In 2001, West continuously worked with artists, recording and producing his work. His sound was featured on Jay-Z's album The Blueprint, which was released on September 11. He worked with Nas and Mobb Deep on a track named "Takeover", and has worked with them since. As his work gained acclaim with critics and fans, West became a major name in the hip hop industry following the release of that album. Still, he was struggling to get a record deal for himself, but labels initially saw him primarily as a producer and pushed him aside due to the fact that he wasn't the stereotypical rap artist and possibly less marketable. In October of 2002, he was nearly killed in a car crash while driving home from a recording. It inspired him to create a single called "Through the Wire", along with "Jesus Walks", which were both a part of his debut album The College Dropout.

His debut album went certified triple platinum and featured guests such as Jay-Z, Ludacris, GLC, Consequence, Talib Kweli, Common, and Syleena Johnson. On August 30, 2005, he released his second album, Late Registration, which received favorable reviews by the critics. The first two singles were "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" and "Gold Digger" (featuring Jamie Foxx). West seemed to lean towards controversy on more than one occasion. In January 2006, he appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in the image of Jesus wearing a crown of thorns. He even suggested that if the Bible were re-written in present day form, he would be famous and important enough to be included in it.

Kanye has recently worked on starring on his own television series, which he plays a character loosely based on his own self. He has also released his third studio album, Graduation, on September 11, 2007 (changing it from the 18th to make it the same as 50 Cent's album Curtis). On September 9, 2007, West performed at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, but lost all five awards he was nominated for that night. After that night, he vowed never to return to MTV's VMA's ever again. In 2008, West was nominated for 8 Grammy Awards and won four.
