Jimmy Buffett Artist Information
James William "Jimmy" Buffett was born on December 25, 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He is known for his all-time hits, such as "Margaritaville" and "Come Monday", has a devoted base of fans known as Parrotheads, is a best-selling writer, is part of two restaurant chains, and most recently has worked as a film producer. Buffett grew up along the easter shore of Mobile Bay and began playing guitar during his college years at Auburn University and The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. His musical career began in Nashville, Tennessee in the late 1960s, recording country music and his first album, Down to Earth, in 1970. Not long after, he moved to Key West and began establishing his persona as an easy-going beach bum. He began combining styles of music-from country, folk, pop and coastal sounds, creating a unique blend of tropical lyrical themes.
Buffett's third album was the 1973 hit, A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean, followed by Havana Daydreamin' in 1976 and Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes in 1977 (which featured the breakthrough song "Margaritaville"). The 1980s proved Buffett's success to be in tourism rather than album sales, always being the popular concert draw. In 1985, he opened the first "Margaritaville" restaurant in Key West, which expanded as time went on. Over the next decade he recorded and released several more albums and did concert tours. In 1997, he collaborated with novelist Herman Wouk to create a musical based on his book, Don't Stop the Carnival. In 2000, Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band played on the White House lawn for President Bill Clinton.
Other work included a partnership in 2003 with Alan Jackson for a duet on a song titled "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" (a number one hit on the country charts). License to Chill was released on July 13, 2004 and topped the U.S. pop albums chart for the first time in his career. Of the over 30 albums he has released in his career, he has had 8 Gold Albums and 9 Platinum/Multi Platinum Albums. He has written three No. 1 best sellers: Tales from Margaritaville, Where Is Joe Merchant?, and A Pirate Looks At Fifty all did very successfully, reaching the New York Times Bestseller lists often. He has taken advantage of his commercial name by branching out into several business ventures over the years. His restaurants, both Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise are both hugely popular. He has part-owned two minor league baseball teams, continued writing bestseller books, and recently announced plans to build the Margaritaville Casino & Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi, to be completed in the spring of 2010.
