Jay-Z Artist Information

Jay-Z was born Shawn Corey Carter on December 4, 1969 in Brooklyn, New York. He was abandoned by his father when he was only twelve, went from school to school and ended up not graduating (citing his excuse was getting caught up in the drug world). His mother eventually bought him a boom box after realizing he needed a release for his rhythm (late night drum patterns on the kitchen table usually), thus sparking his musical interest. Before being known as Jay-Z, Carter was known as "Jazzy" in his neighborhood. In his early career, Jay-Z had a jump start when he was able to hold his own in a rap contest against a popular rapper named Zai. He eventually began making contacts in the recording industry and finally released his first single in 1995 titled, "I Can't Get With That".

After his single release, Jay-Z couldn't find any major labels to sign him to a recording contract. This led him to create Roc-A-Fella records, an independent label with a deal with Priority to distribute his work. His debut album was Reasonable Doubt (1996), a critical success. His follow-up album, In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, was produced by executive Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs and was immediately a better seller than his first work. It was followed up with Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life, and streamlined his career into higher success, winning him a Grammy Award in the process (It was also followed up with a Vol. 3-Life and Times of S. Carter).

Jay-Z's next move would be to begin signing new artists to his label, trying out various new talent in the industry. On September 11, 2001, in lieu of the dark shadowing of the terrorist attacks, he released his album, The Blueprint, which sold more than 450,000 albums in that first week. He would go on to release extensions of that album that did even better than their predecessor, The Blueprint 2.0 selling over 800,000 copies. He then begin to tour with rappers such as 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes and Sean Paul, also finishing an album he initially called his last, The Black Album.

He made a comeback with Kingdom Come on November 21, 2006, and has sold over two million copies to date. This was followed by his new hit album American Gangster, November 6, 2007 (loosely inspired by the film of the same name). Jay-Z also co-founded the urban clothing brand Rocawear in 1999, co-owns The 40/40 Club (an upscale sports bar in New York City), and is also a part owner of the New Jersey Nets of the NBA.
