George Strait Artist Information
George Strait was born in Poteet, Texas on May 18, 1952. His father was a junior high school mathematics teacher and also owned and operated a ranch that had been in their family for almost 100 years. His parents divorced when he was in third grade and his mother left taking his sister with her.
Strait started playing with a rock band in high school, but soon turned to country music. After high school, he attended Southwest Texas State University (now known as Texas State University). He dropped out and eloped with his high school sweetheart, Norma. He enlisted in the army from 1971 to 1975. He enrolled back in the University and formed a country band called Ace in the Hole. He graduated in 1979 with a degree in agriculture.
Ace in the Hole made a few records. They gained a regional following, but never went anywhere. George Strait became friends with Erv Woolsey who had previously worked for MCA records. He convinced some of his Music Row connections to come listen to George Strait and the band play. MCA was very impressed with Strait and quickly signed him in 1980. The band continued to play with him but were now considered his backup/touring band.
George Strait's first single was "Unwound" and in the spring of 1981, it climbed into the Top 10. His son George, Jr. was also born this year. He became one of the best-selling country singers of the 1980s and had an astonishing 31 number one singles that ran well into the 1990s. His albums consistently went platinum or gold. He won the CMA awards for album of the year and male vocalist in 1985 and repeated male vocalist honors in 1986. This year was not all happiness for Strait, his 13-year-old daughter, Jennifer was killed in a car wreck. He won the CMA entertainer of the year in 1989 and 1990.
George Strait decided to take on the big screen in 1992 by starring in the movie, Pure Country. He played a famous country singer who strays too far from his country roots. His love song from the movie, "I Cross My Heart" reached number one and is one of his biggest hits to date.
In 1995, he released a four-disc box set called Strait Out of the Box. It became one of the five best-selling box sets in popular music history. He became the CMA male vocalist again in 1997 and 1998. He had 17 number one hits on the Billboard country charts in the 1990s.
George Strait continued to release may hits in the 2000s. In 2004, he released a new song "I Hate Everything" that was included on the two-disc compilation 50 Number Ones and it reached number one. One of his biggest highlights of his career was being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Nov. 6, 2006. He also has more #1 hits than anyone in any genre.
