Fall Out Boy, commonly known as FOB, was formed in early 2001 by Joe Trohman and Pete Wentz who were friends. They played in various bands in the Chicago area and decided they wanted to form a group that was similar in style to bands they liked such as Green Day, Descendents, and The Smiths. Patrick Stump was added to the band after meeting Trohman in a Borders Bookstore and realizing they had similar musical influences. He was to be the band's drummer, but they soon discovered his vocal talent, thus becoming FOB's lead singer. They added two other Chicago musicians to play drums and guitar, but still had no band name. At the end of their second show, they asked the audience to come up with an idea for a name by yelling out suggestions. Someone shouted "Fallout Boy!" (which is referenced back to a sidekick of the Simpsons cartoon character Radioactive Man). Their first mini-album LP, Fall Out Boy's Evening Out with Your Girlfriend, garnered the groups initial popularity.

Andy Hurley joined the band after the LP release, leading Stump to the guitar (the other two Chicago musicians left) and they worked their way through concerts and into further independent albums. Their first full-length release was Take This to Your Grave in May 2003 with Island Records. The band gained cult popularity with singles such as "Grand Theft Autumn / Where Is Your Boy" and "Saturday", which also received video play on FUSE and MTV, along with scattered radio time. While their first album worked its way to an eventual Gold status, they released their second album, From Under the Cork Tree, which brought great success for the band.

Their first single from that album, "Sugar We're Goin' Down", peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the video reached #1 on MTV's TRL, leading to a Grammy Award nomination for "Best New Artist" in 2006. Fall Out Boy's latest album is titles Infinity on High, released on February 6, 2007. In its opening week, the album reached #1 on the Billboard 200 with hits such as "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" and "The Carpal Tunnel of Love". The band is headlining in the Young Wild Things Tour with Gym Class Heroes, Plain White T's, and Cute Is What We Aim For, beginning in October.
