Eric Clapton Artist Information
Eric Clapton was born in Ripley, Surrey, England and grew up with his grandmother Rose and other family. His first job was as a postman, but when he received his first guitar, a Spanish Hoya, for his 13th birthday, the road to a musical career was paved (though he nearly gave up the guitar in the beginning because it was hard to learn). At the age of 17, Clapton joined his first band called The Roosters. In 1963, he joined The Yardbirds, a bluesy rock and roll band, forging his distinctive style during that period. Before leaving the band, they released a major hit with "For Your Love", in which he played guitar, and also during the time he gained the nickname "Slowhand" (when he broke a string on state, he'd replace it instantly himself, giving the audience a little side-show).
Clapton's next step would be to join John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, which lasted only about a year before he left to form the group Cream. It was during this time that Clapton would get his first real exposure in the U.S. and a new rising guitarist would compete for his title as best blues player-Jimi Hendrix. Cream was able to sell out most of their concert tours and sell millions of albums as they grew in popularity over the next years. Clapton's reign as a guitar hero, however, was reaching new heights and the band would eventually break up. With this breakup, Clapton became enthralled by The Band, even asking to join them, though being turned down. He loved their style and began implementing it into his own new work.
His next band, The Dominoes would release the huge hit "Layla", which would end up a trademark song for Clapton. They would record other great hits, including the number one, "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman", but the band ended up in shambles with personal problems ensuing. He would fight drug addiction in the 70s, creating a career hiatus for a period of time. In 1989, Clapton would gain commercial success in new waves with the release of Journeyman, though enduring personal tragedies throughout this time also.
Rolling Stone says that Clapton is currently working on an album with Robbie Robertson, who toured with him in recent concerts. On January 28, 2008, Eric Clapton was announced as the headliner for the Saturday night of Hard Rock Calling 2008 in London's Hyde Park with appearances by John Mayer and Sheryl Crow. It was also reported on February 26, 2008 that North Korean officials have invited Clapton to play a concert in their communist state. Clapton has agreed to the invitation, saying it should happen sometime in 2009.
