Def Leppard formed in 1977 as a British rock band in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. They began as "Atomic Mass" with Rick Savage, Pete Willis and Tony Kenning as students at Tapton School in Sheffield. Joe Elliot was quickly signed on as the band's lead singer and offered the band a new name: "Deaf Leopard", which was modified to Def Leppard to avoid association with punk music. Other members to join initially were Frank Noon and fifteen year-old drummer Rick Allen.

Their debut album was On Through The Night, which was released on March 14, 1980. Phil Collen replaced Pete Willis in 1982 as guitarist after Willis was fired for alcohol abuse on the job. The band's lead single "Photograph" became a household staple and even supplanting Michael Jackson's "Beat It". Other hit singles at that time were "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin", all found on their third album Pyromania, which sold six million copies in 1983. The band's fame continued to soar in the U.S. although the enthusiasm was not matched in their home country.

By the end of the 80's, Def Leppard sold more records than any other rock band in the U.S. Band member Steve Clark died on January 8, 1991 after an accidental mixing of prescription drugs and alcohol. They continued on and released Adrenalize in 1992 which took simultaneous #1 spots in both the UK and US album charts. Vivian Campbell joined the band later that year as guitarist (formerly of Dio and Whitesnake).

On September 5, 2000, Def Leppard were inducted into the RockWalk of Fame on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard. The ceremony was done by close friend Brian May of Queen. The band released an updated Best Of album in 2004 and a North America-only version Rock of Ages-The Definitive Collection in 2005. Hysteria was re-released in 2006 in a Deluxe Edition with digital remastering and bonus tracks, commemorating its original release. On April 16, 2007 they announced a 50-date concert tour that will spread across the U.S. and Canada.
