The Dave Matthews Band is a United States rock icon that formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991 by Dave Matthews (singer, songwriter, guitarist). The band consists of members: LeRoi Moore (saxophone), Stefan Lessard (bass), Boyd Tinsley (electric violin), and Carter Beuford (drums). Butch Taylor is the bands unofficial member, playing keyboards with the band since 1998, and also Rashawn Ross (trumpet). Their formation dates back to 1990 when Matthews was working as a bartender and began pursuing his music career.

After gaining the support of Carter Beuford and LeRoi Moore, the band began working on Dave's songs in 1991. With their limitation came the need to hire additional musicians, which led to the joining of Lessard, Peter Griesar (former member) and Tinsley. Regular practices began in the basement of Carter and Dave's mother's homes and began working their way into the mainstream. Their first official gig was on May 11, 1991 at a private rooftop party in Charlottesville. The band still had no official name and considered briefly Dumela, but it was dropped and they went on going by the Dave Matthews Band permanently.

DMB released its first album on November 9, 1993, Remember Two Things recorded in Richmond under an independent label. In 1997, the band reached mainstream popularity with recordings such as Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" and "Halloween". They released their first full length live album Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95 in October '97 which featured previous hit songs. Over the next several years and many hits, the DMB worked with superstars like Alanis Morisette, Carlos Santana and Tim Reynolds.

Dave Matthews Band has been awarded the Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1997 with "So Much To Say", has been nominated for a Grammy Award 12 times, won five My VH1 Awards and one NAACP Image award. DMB has released over 15 albums since their formation in the early 90's. Since 1999, the band has contributed $4 million to the BAMA Works Fund which supports projects addressing the needs of disadvantaged youth, disabled, environment and arts and humanities.
