Celine Dion Artist Information
Celine Marie Claudette Dion was born on March 30, 1968 in Charlemagne, Quebec, as part of a large family and being the youngest of fourteen children. Her family was always musically inclined and her parents had a small piano bar called ‘Le Vieux Baril', where she and her siblings often sang together. At the age of twelve, Celine composed her first song with help from her mother and brother Jacques, "Ce n'etait qu'un reve" ("It Was Only a Dream"). After hearing the recording of the song, music manager Rene Angelil was so moved, he mortgaged his own house to fund her first album, thus beginning her stardom as she ventured out and began making a name for herself.
After winning multiple awards and contests, Celine's fame began to explode. At the age of eighteen she was impressed by Michael Jackson and decided she wanted to be a performer like him. Her manager realized that if she were to go worldwide, she'd need to change her image and become more marketable. She stepped back briefly from the spotlight to work on her English in 1989 and undergo a physical makeover. A year later, she released Unison, her first Anglophone market album, and it was widely accepted. This was the album that established her as an American singer.
Celine Dion married her manager Angelil in December of 1994 in which she declared her love for him in her third Anglophone album The Colour of My Love. This was the album that produced her first three-time number one hit, "The Power of Love", which would end up a signature hit for Dion. Through the mid-90s, she transistioned her musical styles away from rock influences towards a more soulful pop sound. Her fourth Anglophone album, Falling into You (1996), was a reflection of her career at its peak and introduced a furthering of boundaries in musical style and instrumentation. She even gained huge critical and popular praise for her song "My Heart Will Go On", from the hit film Titanic.
With the turn of the century, Dion stated that she needed to step back and settle down in life. Not longer after, she gave birth to a son, Rene-Charles Dion Angelil on January 25, 2001 in Florida. At the end of the same year, she returned to the music scene with a television performance of "God Bless America" and began the path back into new recordings. She released A New Day Has come (March 2002), One Heart (2003), Miracle (2004), and Taking Chances (November 2007) with a return to music that has strengthened her name as a superstar and proved that she will continue on for time to come. She also does much work with charities and other fundraising benefits, such as Idol Gives Back (2007 and 2008).
