Bruce Springsteen Artist Information

Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen was born on September 23, 1949 in Long Branch, New Jersey. He was inspired to take up music at the age of seven after watching Elvis Presley perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. Bruce pursued his music and became the lead guitarist of The Castiles at the age of sixteen and later worked in bands such as Child (later named Steel Mill), continuing to gather a cult following at local hotspots in Jersey. Springsteen toyed around with different names for his group of band members; Dr Zoom & the Sonic Boom, Sundance Blues Band, and The Bruce Springsteen Band. Finally, in 1972, Springsteen signed a record deal with Columbia Records and formed his latest group, the E Street Band. He gained the nickname, "The Boss" in his early career-a name given to him by his band as he passed out to them their payments after a gig. Though he initially didn't accept the nickname, time has changed his mind some. He jokingly refers to himself by the name at concerts from time to time.

Springsteen's first album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. (released in 1973), established his roots in the industry, and has been compared to works such as Bob Dylan. His second album, The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle, was critically acclaimed, but commercially unsuccessful. With the release of big-budget Born to Run on August 25, 1975, success finally landed the band. Many fans deem it Springsteen's finest work, and one of the best rock-and-roll albums of all time. In 1978, he released Darkness on the Edge of Town, an album that would be the turning point of his career and reflect his growing intellectual political awareness; as well as a change in the way his music/lyrics were formed. The late seventies proved not only could he be successful as a musical artist, but others could take his previously un-released music and find success.

Springsteen is likely best known for his album Born in the U.S.A., released in 1984, selling 15 million copies in the States alone (seven singles hitting the top 10). "Dancing in the Dark" was among the biggest hits of that particular album, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard charts. Tunnel of Love, Human Touch and Lucky Town were albums where Springsteen reflected a more confident attitude in music and life. His song, "Streets of Philadelphia" in 1994 became a huge hit (a part of the Philadelphia film soundtrack). Springsteen's more current work includes his first studio effort with the full band in 18 years, The Rising. It was a dedication to the September 11 attacks and received enormous success. He continues to support charities, appear at award ceremonies and appear in political campaigns. His latest album, Magic, is slated to be released October 2, 2007.
