Britney Spears Artist Information
Britney Spears was born December 2, 1981 in Kentwood, LA. She auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club when she was eight, but wouldn't be added to the cast for another three years. In 1991, she earned a role in the off-Broadway play Ruthless. She was also a contestant on Star Search in 1992, where she won the first round, but ultimately lost. She became a Mouseketeer a year later and was a part of the show from the age of 11 to 13. She returned to her hometown after that to attend high school for a year.
Britney Spears was signed to Jive Record Label and released her first album, Baby One More Time in 1999. It sprung her into instant stardom and established her as a pop icon. Her cover on Rolling Stone magazine also established her as an international sex symbol and was very controversial. She followed the album up with Oops!...I Did it Again that following year and then Britney in 2001. The album's success made her the only female artist in history to have her first three albums debut at number one.
Britney Spears opened her restaurant, Nyla, in New York City in 2002. It served Louisianan and Italian cuisine, but closed in 2003. She also starred in her first motion picture, Crossroads, in 2002. Britney Spears starred as a young woman who embarks on a road trip with three friends in search of her mother. Her fans turned out in droves for the movie, but it wasn't enough to make the movie a hit. She received a Razzie Award for it where she shared a trophy with Madonna for the Worst Actress of 2002. This wasn't the last thing that her and her idol shared. Madonna and Britney shared a provocative lip lock at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003.
On January 3, 2004, Spears married her childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas. The marriage only lasted 55 hours and ended in annulment stating that Spears "lacked understanding of her actions to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to marriage because before entering into the marriage the Plaintiff and Defendant did not know each others' likes and dislikes, each others' desires to have or not have children, and each other's desires as to State of residency."
In July 2004, she announced her engagement to Kevin Federline. The couple had only met three months earlier. The beginning of their relationship was chronicled in Spear's first reality show, Britney & Kevin: Chaotic. They married on September 18th at a home in Studio City, CA. A year later, she gave birth to their first son, Sean Preston, on September 14, 2005. A year after that, she gave birth to their second son, Jayden James, on September 12.
Britney Spear's life took a turn for the worse. She filed for divorce on November 7, 2006, citing irreconcilable differences and asked for custody of the children. Kevin said that he was caught totally by surprise. By February 16, she stayed in an off-shore drug rehabilitation center in Autigua for less than 24 hours. The next night, she walked into a beauty salon in Tarzana, CA and shaved her head with electric clippers.
In September 2007, Britney was ordered to undergo random drug and alcohol tests and to attend parent counseling. They continued to share joint custody, but a few days later, she was charged with a misdemeanor hit-and-run and driving without a license. She lost physical custody of her children on October 1. Her fifth album, Blackout was released on October 30, 2007 and made Britney Spears the only female music artist to have her first five albums go to number one and two.
She was hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in January 2008 after she refused to relinquish custody of her children to Federline. She "appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance." Her visitation rights were suspended and a court placed her under temporary co-conservatorship for her father and Andrew Wallete. She was taken to UCLA Medical Center to be put on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold. She was released on February 6, amid rumors that she has bipolar disorder. On July 18, 2008, Spears got visitation rights back for her children.
Jive released a statement on September 15, saying that Britney Spears would be releasing her sixth album, Circus. The single, "Womanizer", became the first number one single on the Hot 100 since her debut, "Baby One More Time." She won two awards at the MTV Europe Music Awards in November. Her career is once again, on it's way up!
