Billy Joel Artist Information

William Joseph Martin "Billy" Joel was born on May 9, 1949 in Bronx, New York and raised in Hicksville, NY. Though reluctantly, Billy began piano lessons at an early age with his mother’s insistence that he be exposed to it. He even took up boxing to defend himself against school bullies when they made fun of his interest in music rather than sports. After being inspired by a Beatles performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, he decided to pursue a full-time musical career and immediately started the search for a band to join. At the age of 14, he joined the Echoes, who played various covers in New York. The group changed their name to the Emeralds, and then to the Lost Souls, and Billy continued to play and record with them for the next two years. Following the Lost Souls was the Hassles.

Joel then signed his first solo record contract with Artie Ripp (of Family Productions) and recorded the album, Cold Spring Harbor. In late 1973, after being bought out from Ripp, he released Piano Man, which quickly became certified Gold (it has sold over four million copies to date). He stayed in Los Angeles and released his second Columbia album, Streetlife Serenade, which didn’t have the success of his debut album, but still featured some classic hits. He returned to New York ready to begin a new start in his musical style, and he ended up producing much of his own work to ensure the outcome he desired. His album, The Stranger, brought him much acclaim and awards such as a Top Ten album, number two on the charts, and four Top 40 hits.

Although he was hugely popular for his work with piano ballads, he desired to also be known for other styles. In 1980, he released Glass Houses, a work in the Pop-Rock category. Following a motorcycle accident and vacation time, he released the hit single, "Uptown Girl" (thought to be written about Christie Brinkley, whom he dated). It was found on the album, An Innocent Man, another smash success. Joel would go on to work with many other artists and do work in the film industry as well. He even did voice work on Disney’s Oliver & Company in 1988, which featured the song "Why Should I Worry" Also, in 1989, after touring in Russia, he released Storm Front, his third greatest successful album. On January 7, 2006 (having not written or released new work in 13 years), Joel began a tour across the United States. He even sang the national anthem twice at Super Bowl XLI in 2007.
