B.B. King Artist Information
“The King of Blues” B.B. King was born Riley B. King on September 16, 1925 in Itta Bena, Mississippi. King has become an American Icon over the last 50 years in blues guitar and singing-songwriting. He recently ranked 3rd on the Rolling Stones list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time and is considered by many to be the greatest living guitarists today.
While working as a disc jockey in Memphis in his early career, he gained the nickname “Beale Street Blues Boy” which led to a shortened B.B. King. He began his recording career in 1947 with RPM Records in Los Angeles and in the 1950’s, he made his name in the R&B industry with hits like “You Know I Love You”, “Woke Up This Morning”, “Please Love Me”, “When My Heart Beats like a Hammer”, “Sweet Little Angel” and many more. His recording in 1964, Live at the Regal in Chicago, Illinois became phenomenal with his fan base.
King made his way into mainstream popularity with hits that touched outside the boundaries of R&B, like his ’69 remake of “The Thrill is Gone”, and he even appeared as an opening act on The Rolling Stones 1969 American Tour. His success carried through the 1970’s with other hits like “To Know You Is to Love You” and “I Like to Live the Love”. Although King began recording less and less over the next couple of decades, his place in the spotlight only grew as he maintained a very active career with television appearances and live performances.
His 1988 single “When Love Comes to Town” recorded with the band U2 on the Rattle and Hum album reached out to a generation of fans. He even teamed up with Eric Clapton in 2000 to record Riding With the King. Over many years now, B.B. King concerts have been broadcast over 100 times in many countries. A B.B. King Musesum and Delta Interpretive Center is scheduled to open May 1, 2008 in Indianola, Mississippi.
B.B. King is known for many personal traits, which include being a non-drinker/non-smoker, a vegetarian, a licensed pilot, a gambler, and a visible spokesman for the fight against diabetes (King was diagnosed over ten years ago). He is an extreme advocate of musical education for children and in 2002, signed on as an official supporter of Little Kids Rock which is a nonprofit organization that provides free instruments and lessons to children in public schools in the U.S.
